Hardness is the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in water. Hardness causes scale build-up, restriction of pipes, interferes with soaps/cleaning products, stains and dry skin. Softener (Ion exchange resin) is the most common method for hardness removal. Softener sytsems will remove hardness, low levels of iron and manganese. Softener manufactures available Aqua-Pure, MacClean, and Tenergy.
System sizes range from 1.0 cu.ft. - 2.5 cu.ft.
Neutralizing Systems For Low pH
The accetable pH range for your water is 6.5 - 8.5. A low pH or acid water will cause corrosion of plumbing systems. Most noticeable by bluish/green staining on plumbing fixtures. Staining occurs due to the oxidation of copper once it is exposed to the air. Neutralizers use an alkaline based media to increase the pH. This media will also increase hardness. Because of the increase in hardness it is common that a neutralizer and softener are used together for the complete conditioning of the water. Type of neutralizers available are upflow and auto-backwashing systems. Other methods of treatment are available.
Iron Systems
Iron greater than 0.3mg/l (ppm) usually becomes a problem. Iron is very common in well water and noticeable by staining on fixtures and clothes and the restriction of water flow. Low levels of iron (< 2-3 ppm) can be filtered by softeners. Iron levels > 3 will need more complete filtration. The best method of iron filtration is based on the complete water quality.
Hydrogen Sulfide Systems
Hydrogen Sulfide gas or rotten egg odors are caused by bacteria or from the decaying material buried in or near the water source. Rotten egg odor is more noticeable by smell than test. If bacterial contamination is suspected then either a sample should be collected for bacteria testing or the well should be bleached. The method of treatment for rotten egg odors is determined by the level of hydrogen sulfide present. Air-exchange tanks or oxidation/filtration methods are available. The best method of treatment is determined after a complete water evaluation.
